Bruins Ready to Contend for NCAA Men's Golf Title
May 30, 2004
The second-ranked UCLA men's golf team will compete in the NCAA Men's Golf Championships, June 1-4, at The Cascades Course on the Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, VA.
The NCAA Championships features 30 of the nation's top teams and six individuals in a 72-hole stroke play format. Eighteen holes will be played each day.
The Bruins will be making their second straight appearance in the national championship tournament and 49th overall. UCLA won the NCAA title in 1988, and last year finished third, its highest non-winning finish.
'We're excited to be returning to the NCAA Championships for the second straight year as the West Regional champions,' said Head Coach O.D. Vincent. 'Our goal all season has been to win the championship, and we have put ourselves in a solid position to do that.
'The victory by our women's team gave us a lot of inspiration,' he continued. 'They persevered through tough conditions to bring home the title.'
UCLA will field its veteran fivesome of four seniors and a junior for the last time this week. Three-year lettermen Steve Conway, Travis Johnson, John Merrick and Roy Moon plus junior John Poucher have played more than 500 combined rounds of golf for UCLA. Each has won at least one tournament title, and all have been part of 10 victories since last February. These include a conference title and a pair of NCAA West Regional crowns.
This season Johnson, leads the team in scoring average at 71.4. He earned co-medlist honors at the West Regionals. Conway won his third career individual title by capturing first place at the Mackenzie Invitational in September, and Merrick won for the second time in his career by opening the season with a victory at the Inverness Invitational. All three recently were named to the All-Pacific Region Team.
Moon won the Northwest Shootout on May 10 and Poucher won the Fall Preview. Poucher, who tied for sixth at the West Regionals, has finished among the Top 20 in his last four events.
