Corkery And Warburg Win NCAA Doubles Championship
May 31, 2004
TULSA, Okla. - The Stanford University men's tennis doubles team of junior Sam Warburg and sophomore KC Corkery capped the 2004 season with a national title. The Cardinal All-American tandem defeated Bo Hodge and John Isner of Georgia, 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-4. in the finals of the NCAA Doubles Championship to claim the crown.
'Obviously, Georgia played good all year,' said Stanford Head Coach Dick Gould. 'They're a great team. I thought our guys had to play their best match to get through those guys and they did.'
Like they did in the semifinals, Corkery and Warburg got off to a hot start, grabbing the first set, 6-2.
'Today, we started off well. That's something we've been doing all tournament,' said Corkery.
The hard serving Hodge and Isner would bounce back and take the second set, 6-7 (3).
'We returned well, but with their big serves we knew it would be a test,' said Warburg. 'We knew holding serve would be a huge priority, and if we could hold serve consistently, we felt like we had a really good shot.'
'We felt like we can return against anyone,' added Corkery. 'We new they had big serves and they'd be tough. We really wanted to make them play and not give anything away in the first couple of games, because it's very easy to be nervous in the national championship.'
Corkery and Warburg closed out the match by taking the third set, 6-4. The duo becomes the 14th doubles team in Stanford history to be crowned NCAA Champions. The 14 NCAA Champions rank as the third most in NCAA history, behind only USC (20) and Harvard (17).
'KC played great all match. This week we've been kind of struggling,' said Warburg. 'In the last game I hit a couple of good shots, and KC was doing what he was doing all match, all tournament, all year and all career.'
Corkery and Warburg end the year with a 19-4 overall record, while Hodge and Isner, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, finish the season with a 40-7 overall record.
