Nick Hundley Named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week

June 1, 2004

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA sophomore catcher Nick Hundley and STANFORD sophomore left-handed pitcher Mark Romanczuk, have been named Pac-10 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 25-31, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Hundley, from Redmond, Wash., went 6-for-12 (.500) over the weekend with all six hits going for extra bases. He finished the weekend with four doubles, two home runs (his first two of the year), five RBI and a slugging percentage of 1.333. Hundley's biggest moment came in the 7-6 win over USC on May 30. Down 4-6 in the eighth with a trip to Regionals on the line, Hundley hit a first-pitch fast ball off the scoreboard in right field for a three-run winning home run, giving Arizona the series win over USC 2-1 and helping cement a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the Wildcats.

Romanczuk, from Newark, Del., pitched seven scoreless two-hit innings to pick up his Pac-10 co-leading 11th victory of the season in a 5-0 win over No. 16 Arizona State on May 28, giving Stanford then at least a share of the Conference Title. (The Cardinal won the title outright with a 10-3 win over ASU the following day.) Romanczuk faced the minimum number of batters in four of his seven innings of work and never allowed a runner past second base. He had five strikeouts on the night.

The Player of the Week honor is the first-ever for Hundley, while it is the 42nd such honor for Arizona. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the second of the season, fifth all-time for Romanczuk and the 67th selection all-time for Stanford.
