USC's 2004 Football Game At BYU Moved To Sept. 18

June 1, 2004

Defending national champion USC's football game at BYU this coming season has been moved to Sept. 18. It will be shown live nationally on ESPN during primetime, with exact kickoff time to be determined.

The game originally was scheduled for Sept. 4.

'There were a number of reasons why we made this date switch,' said USC senior associate athletic director Daryl Gross. 'First, having an early bye favors our players academically by allowing them to start school properly. It lets them have a week off between our big road opener (Aug. 28 against Virginia Tech in the Black Coaches Association Classic in Landover, Md.) and our home opener (Sept. 11 versus Colorado State). Otherwise, they would miss significant portions of class time while traveling during the first two weeks of the semester.

'Second, competitively, coach Pete Carroll is all for it because it helps balance out our schedule. Now we won't have two byes in a three-week span (USC doesn't play on Oct. 2).

'And third, now our fans throughout the country can see the game on live national television.

'We've been working on this change for quite a while and there have been lots of hurdles to overcome. We understand that the lateness of this change might inconvenience some of our fans who made plans based on the original date. We will do everything we can to accommodate them. But we believe that our fans support the academic welfare of our student-athletes and they also understand how this gives us a competitive edge.'

Fan who have purchased tickets to the BYU game from the USC Ticket Office will be contacted soon.
