Bears Maintain Lead at NCAA Championships

June 2, 2004

HOT SPRINGS, Va. - The Cal men's golf team held on to its one-shot lead at the NCAA championships with a 9-over-par 289 during the second round Wednesday at the Homestead Resort's Cascades course.

Halfway through the four-day tournament, the Golden Bears stand at 8-over 568, one stroke up on Kentucky and two ahead of BYU. Pepperdine and Washington are tied for fourth at 571.

In the individual competition, Cal's Jeff Hood shot a 1-over 71 Wednesday after firing a 65 in the opening round. He is now tied for the lead at 4-under-par 136 with Arizona's Chris Nallen and Matt Wells of Kentucky.

Starting on the 10th hole, the 20th-ranked Bears jumped out to a fast start and built a double-digit lead midway through the round. Despite struggling down the stretch, Cal maintained its spot atop the leaderboard. Only Pepperdine, at 4-under, managed to break par on the day.

Hood, a junior who entered the NCAA tournament as the 82nd-ranked player in the country, held a one-stroke advantage after the first day and got his score to 7-under after birdies on the 12th and 16th holes. However, he gave back three strokes with a double-bogey on No. 6 and a bogey on No. 8.

Senior Scott Carlyle matched Hood for Cal's lowest score of the day with a 71. In addition, Peter Tomasulo shot a 73, Michael Wilson a 74 and Jesse Ruda a 76.

The field of 30 teams will be whittled down to the Top 15 after Thursday's third round, with the remaining schools battling it out on Friday for the NCAA title.
