Buche, Timinsky And Winant Earn First Team Academic All-Pac-10 Honors

UCLA distance runners - redshirt sophomores, Maribeth Buche and Jenna Timinsky, along with junior Carmen Winant were named first-team Academic All-Pac-10, announced today by Commissioner Tom Hansen. To be eligible for selection to the conference academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.

Buche, a 1500m runner, has a 3.83gpa (economics major); Timinsky, who placed fourth at the 2004 Pac-10 meet in the 800 and who has a best time of 2:06.26, has a 3.84gpa (linguistics/anthropology major) and Winant, who has best marks this year of 17:31.86 (5000m) and 36:03.42(10,000m) has a 3.83gpa (art major).

Earning second-team conference Academic honors were - sophomore pole vaulter Jackie Nguyen, a 2004 NCAA Outdoor qualifier (13-2.50), who has a 3.64gpa (physiological studies major) and junior Carolyn Shea, who had the team's top 3000m steeplechase mark this season (11:19.95), with a 3.52gpa (communications studies major).

The Bruins had an additional five athletes earn Honorable Mention Academic Pac-10 honors. They are - sophomore Ashley Caldwell, the 2004 Pac-10 800m champion; sophomore Sheena Gordon, the 2004 NCAA West Region high jump champion; sophomore distance runner Emily Haigh; senior Melissa McBain, a 2004 NCAA Outdoor qualifier in the 1500m and sophomore distance runner Sarah West.
