Jed Pennell, Birte Steven Earn Pacific-10 Medals

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Wrestler Jed Pennell and swimmer Birte Steven have been named the winners of the school's Pacific-10 Conference Medals for the 2003-04 academic year. A conference medal is awarded each year to each school's outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.

Pennell (Cave Junction, Ore./Illinois Valley HS) has a 3.80 GPA while majoring in Exercise and Sport Science and earned Pacific-10 Conference all-academic honors four times, including three times as a first-team selection. He was recently named to the CoSIDA Region VIII All-Academic first team and has been awarded one of just 174 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships for 2003-04 seniors nationwide.

The Pac-10 runner-up at 174 pounds this past season and at 184 pounds as a junior, Pennell finished his career ranked among the Beavers' all-time top 50 in both career wins and career pins. Pennell's other activities include volunteering at OSU's English Language Institute and working with the university's Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.

Steven (Hannover, Germany/Humboldtgymnasium HS) has a 3.90 grade point average while majoring in Psychology, and she was recently named the to the CoSIDA District VIII All-Academic first team. A seven-time All-American, she finished second in the 200-meter breaststroke and third in the 100-meter breaststroke at the 2004 NCAA Championships; she owns three OSU school records.

The German national record holder in the 200 breaststroke, Steven will race in this week's German Olympic Trials. Steven, who worked as a research assistant in OSU's psychology department, is a three-time first team Pacific-10 All-Academic selection. On Tuesday, she was named Oregon State's Female Athlete of the Year for 2003-04, the second straight year she has earned that honor.
