Mendiola, Mackenzie Earn Pac-10 Conference Medals

June 2, 2004

Seattle - University of Washington seniors Brock Mackenzie and Giuliana Mendiola have been named the UW's two recipients of the Pacific-10 Conference Medal. The medal is awarded to each member institution's outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.

Mackenzie, the most decorated golfer in Washington history, was named one of five finalists for the 2004 Hogan Award presented to the nation's top collegiate golfer. He is the first three-time first-team All-Pac-10 selection in school history and holds numerous career records, including tournament victories (four), top-10 finishes (32), rounds played (161) and the single-season mark for top-10 finishes (11 in 2002). Mackenzie is currently competing in the NCAA Championships in Virginia Hot Springs, Va.

A graduate of Eisenhower High School in Yakima, Wash., Mackenzie has led the team in stroke average all four seasons and was recently named to the Pac-10's honorable mention All-Academic team.

Mendiola, from Lake Forest, Calif., earned Kodak/WBCA and Associated Press All-America honorable mention acclaim for the second-straight year. She led the Huskies in scoring (21.3 ppg), rebounding (6.5) and assists (5.5). Among her many accolades, Mendiola, a three-time All-Pac-10 selection, set Washington single-season records for scoring (661 points) and assists (172).

Mendiola finished her Husky career as the school's second-leading all-time scorer (1,928 points) and holds the UW's career assists record (612). She was named Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention three times and is currently a member of the WNBA's Sacramento Monarchs.

The 20 Pac-10 Conference Medal winners will be honored at the State Farm Pride of the Pac-10 Luncheon held in Los Angeles in conjunction with the Pac-10 Men's Basketball Tournament next March.
