Cats Move to Fourth Place at NCAA Golf Championships

HOT SPRINGS, Va. - The University of Arizona qualified for Friday's final round of the 2004 Men's Golf Championships after a three-over par round Thursday moved it into a tie for fourth place at The Homestead Resort here.

The young Wildcat team has plenty of company from the Pac-10, with UCLA, California and Washington all in position to make a bid for the title, though the Bruins made the strongest move Thursday.

Wildcat senior Chris Nallen carded a second-consecutive 67 on The Cascades Course to stay close to the lead in the individual competition. Ryan Moore of UNLV, whose eagle on the par-5 17th hole helped give him a six-under 64 on the par-70, 6,679-yard layout, took the individual lead with a 201 overall score, nine under. Nallen is two off the pace, seven under for the tournament at 203.

The Cats posted a 283 Thursday, three over par, for a three day total of 856, tied with Washington nine strokes behind the leader UCLA (275/847), Kentucky (283/852) and California (287/855). UA jumped four spots in the standings today, while the Bruins leapfrogged from out of the top five into the lead with a third-round -5, the only team among the leaders that finished under par for the day.

Nallen had six birdies on Thursday including four in the final seven holes, but also bogied the four-par 13th and the three-par 18th.

UA had a one-over effort by junior Nick Juszczak, a two-over score from freshman Henry Liaw, and a three-over 73 from freshman Mark Lamb to go with Nallen's round for its third-round scoring. Josh Esler finished with a 76. Lamb is tied at for 24th at +4 (214), Liaw is tied for 69th at +10 (220), Juszczak is tied for 123th at +16 (226) and Esler is tied for 144th at +20 (230).

UA was tied for 18th after its first-round score of 292, and moved into a tie for eighth place with a one-over 281 in its second round for a two-day total of 573. California, the two-round leader,
