OSU Places Ninth At IRAs

CAMDEN, N.J.- - The No. 8 Oregon State men's varsity eight placed ninth Saturday at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships on the Cooper River, matching OSU's third-best performance at the IRAs. The junior varsity and freshman eights both won their respective third level finals.

The varsity eight, racing in the Petite Final that determined places 7-12, posted a time of six minutes, 12.85 seconds to take third in the race, just .49 seconds behind No. 5 Northeastern. No. 12 Yale won the Petite Final with a time of 6:08.70 to take home seventh place.

OSU's second varsity eight, after a day of rest on Friday, won the third level final with a time of 6:21.94, more than three seconds ahead of second-place Brown.

The freshman eight, after winning the third semifinal on Friday, also won their third level final after posting a time of 6:30.48. Washington came in second at 6:35.15.

Harvard won the varsity eight Grand Final with a time of 5:53.18 to defend its national title and finish the season undefeated. Pac-10 rival Washington took second place.

JV 8, THIRD LEVEL FINAL - 1. Oregon State 6:21.94; 2. Brown 6:24.96; 3. Ithaca 6:27.68; 4. Rutgers 6:30.77; 5. Marist 6:38.41; 6. MIT 6:46.84.

FRESHMAN 8, THIRD LEVEL FINAL - 1. Oregon State 6:30.48; 2. Washington 6:35.15; 3. St. Joe's 6:37.84; 4. Michigan 6:38.84; 5. Georgetown 6:44.93; 6. Hobart 6:51.96.
