June 7, 2004
Seattle - Washington freshmen Erik Olson (Renton) and Alex Prugh (Spokane) were named honorable mention selections today to the PING All-American team by the Golf Coaches Association of America. They junior senior Brock Mackenzie, who was named a first-team selection last Friday following the final round of the NCAA Championships.
Prugh was 28th at the NCAAs while Olson placed 33rd, helping Washington to a sixth-place finish. The Husky freshmen become just the sixth and seventh players in school history to earn All-American honors. They are the first freshman to be recognized since Mackenzie was a honorable mention pick in 2001.
Prugh played in all 13 team tournaments this year and posted a stroke average of 73.7. His best tournament was at The Nelson where he placed 10th after shooting 4-under 209. Olson played in 11 events during the year and had a stroke average of 74.1. His best outing came in the season opener when he was fifth at the Husky Invitational.
'It is quite an accomplishment to receive this honor as a freshman,' said Husky coach Matt Thurmond. 'I think their play at the NCAAs showed a lot of people what they are capable of. Our program is going to be in very good shape in the future with players like this competing for the Huskies.'
