Thunder, Lightning, Torrential Rains Force Postponement At NCAA Championships

June 9, 2004

Austin, Tx - Thunder and lightning plus torrential rains forced evacuation of fans and competitors on three different occasions at Myers Stadium on Wednesday, the site of first day competition at the 2004 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track & Field Championships. Flash flood warnings were also issued to several areas of the Austin area where temperatures have been warm and humid.

Heavy rains prevailed throughout Wednesday night which forced running and field events to be postponed until Thursday. Several Stanford athletes were expected to compete on Wednesday night including the men's 400 meter relay team, Chinny Offor in the women's 800 meters, Undine Becker in the long jump, Janice Davis in the women's 100 meters, Stanley Wilson in the men's 100 meters, Nashonme Johnson in the women's 400 meters, Nick Sebes in the men's 400 meters, Katy Trotter in the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase, Ian Dobson in the men's 3,00 meter steeplechase, Sara Bei in the 5,000 meters, and Jacob Gomez, Seth Hejny and Louis Luchini in the men's 5,000 meters. All those Stanford athletes plus Cardinal competitors who were slated for Thursday's competition will make for an extremely busy day.

The Stanford women's 400 meter relay team competed in a heavy rainfall during the late afternoon, and following the race, the rain reached monsoon-like conditions followed by the sounds of thunder and the flash of lightning. Shortly after completion of the women's 400 meter relay, the public address announcer at Myers Stadium (which is located on the University of Texas campus) announced evacuation of the stadium as the thunder and lightning sent spectators and athletes seeking safety at the football stadium across the street from the track facility.

Stanford's women's team of Janice Davis, Nashonme Johnson, Christine Moschella and Ashley Purnell finished third in their heat with a time of 44.46. That time was eighth-best among 20 teams to move Stanford into the finals on Friday night. LSU has the best time at 43.04 followed by Texas at 43.41 and Arkansas at 43.84.

In the early evening, the NCAA announced the suspension of the first day's activities, and later in the evening, announced a revised schedule.

Some outlying areas of Austin experienced 8-10 inches of rain in a 36-hour period. Weather forecasters are expecting a 30 percent chance of a brief rain shower on Thursday and 20 percent on Friday with no rain in the forecast on Saturday, the final day of track & field competition. The temperature is expected to be in the high 80's on Thursday and in the low 90's on Friday and Saturday in the Austin area. High humidity is expected.
