Bruins Set School Record in 1600m Relay at NCAA Championships

Austin, TX - At the 2004 NCAA Track & Field Championships, held at Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium, the Bruin 4x400m relay set a school record of 3:27.57, breaking the previous record of 3:28.58 set in 2002. The Bruin women did not compete in today's finals. In prelim action, six Bruin women and both relays have advanced to the finals.

Almost all of the yesterday's events were postponed yesterday due to inclement weather. As a result, field events will be competed as finals. The running events scheduled for yesterday will consist of preliminary rounds and finals (no semifinals).

Final Results

Long Jump - As one of yesterday's events, the long jump was competed as a prelim and final. Junior Candice Baucham finished eighth in flight two, 22nd overall, with a jump of 19-8.25 (6.00m, +2.1).

Preliminary Results

Hammer Throw - Senior Cari Soong and junior Jessica Cosby both competed in the first flight of the hammer competition. Soong finished third, sixth overall, with a throw of 207-1 (63.13m). Cosby was fourth in the flight, seventh overall, with a throw of 206-3 (62.86m).

Shot Put - Freshman Kamaiya Warren and Cosby competed in the first flight. Warren was third in the flight, sixth overall, with a throw of 55-1 (16.79m). Cosby was seventh in the flight, 10th overall, with a throw of 53-7.50 (16.34m).

4x100m - The 4x100m prelim was competed on Wednesday, June 9, prior to the weather delay. UCLA's squad of Sani Roseby, Adia McKinnon, Dawn Harper and Monique Henderson was tied with TCU for ninth place at 44.51. It was determined that TCU was ninth at 44.503 and UCLA was 10th in 44.509. It was later determined that Texas' relay was disqualified as a result of NCAA rule 5-8-4. As a result, UCLA advances to the final as the ninth team.

100m Hurdles - Three Bruin competed in the 100m hurdles prelim. Senior Sheena Johnson and sophomore Dawn Harper ran in the first heat. Johnson won in 12.85 (+2.2) and Harper was second in a wind-aided personal best of 12.91 (+2.2). Senior Sani Roseby ran in the fourth and final heat, placing third in 13.25 (+2.1). Johnson, who was third overall, was an automatic qualifier. Harper, sixth overall, was a time qualifier. Roseby was 13th overall and did not advance.

800m - Sophomore Ashley Caldwell finished third in heat two in 2:06.51. She tied for ninth overall with Aneita Denton. In a tiebreaker, Denton's time was 2:06.502 and Caldwell's time was 2:06.504. Caldwell ended 10th overall and did not advance to the final.

1500m - Senior Melissa McBain and sophomore Alejandra Barrientos competed in the first heat. McBain finished seventh, 12th overall, in 4:20.51. Barrientos was 12th, 19th overall, in 4:25.72. McBain advanced to the final as a time qualifier.

4x400m - UCLA's squad of Sani Roseby, Sheena Johnson, Adia McKinnon and Monique Henderson finished second in heat one in a school record 3:27.57. They automatically qualified for the final as a top-two finisher. The Bruins' 3:27.57 was the fourth fastest of the night.
