June 10, 2004

AUSTIN, Texas - Cal junior Brooke Meredith claimed fifth-place in the NCAA Championships heptathlon today with 5,442 points to earn All-American status. After being in 12th at the close of the first day's competition, Meredith's rise was spurred by winning the javelin - the sixth of the seven events - with a throw of 135-07 (41.33m).

Meredith is the school record-holder in the new javelin with a personal best of 148-00 (45.11m).

She claimed ninth in the long jump with a jump of 18-10.75 (5.76m) and finished eighth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.16. With her national finish, Meredith earned four team points for the Bears at the meet.

'We are real happy about how Brooke finished the season,' said Tony Sandoval, associate director of Cal track & field. 'She piggy-backed her All-American performance here on her All-American performance indoors.'

Elsewhere on the field, Teak Wilburn jumped 7-01.50 (2.17m) into a 14-way tie for first to advance to the finals. The sophomore high jumper was Cal's top finisher at last year's NCAAs (t12th) and enters the meet ranked second in the country.

In the men's shot put preliminaries, junior Rhuben Williams advanced to the finals with a shot of 61-03.00 (18.67m), good for eighth in the preliminary round. Senior Amin Nikfar finished 21st, matching his place from last year, putting 58-02.50 (17.74m).
