Two Arizona Men's Basketball Players at USA Basketball Trials for Young Men

TUCSON, Ariz. - Two University of Arizona men's basketball players have accepted invitations to participate in the trials for the 2004 USA Basketball World Championship for Young Men Qualifying Team, it was announced Thursday by USA Basketball.

Hassan Adams and Mustafa Shakur are among 24 athletes that will participate in the 2004 USA National Team trials and training camp June 16-23 in East Rutherford, N.J. Once selected, the team is scheduled to compete in the 2004 FIBA Americas World Championships for Young Men Qualifying Tournament to be held July 28-Aug. 1 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. To be eligible for this team, athletes must be a U.S. citizen and 20-years-old or younger (born on or after Jan. 1, 1984).

Adams, a 6-foot-4, 201-pound, forward from Los Angeles, Calif., just completed his sophomore season and enjoyed his best collegiate campaign by averaging a career-best 17.2 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 30 games in 2003-04. He connected on 54.2 percent of his field goal attempts (200-of-369) and finished the year as the Wildcats' leading scorer. Adams also ranked second on the club in field goal percentage, blocked shots (45) and steals (45), and third in rebounds per game average.

Shakur, a 6-foot-3, 178-pound freshman from Philadelphia, Pa., just completed his freshman season and posted averages of 9.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. A starter in 28 of 30 appearances this year, Shakur shot 51.9 percent (107-of-206) from the field and 80.3 percent (49-of-61) from the line. He was named to the Pac-10 Conference all-Freshman team for his efforts. Shakur was a member of the 2003 USA Men's Junior World Championship team that finished in fifth place with a 7-1 record and averaged 5.0 points, 1.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists in those eight games in Thesssaloniki, Greece.

The 12-member squad, coached by Kelvin Sampson of the University of Oklahoma, will be named sometime before the team's final practice in New Jersey on June 23.
