All-Americans All Over NCAA Championships

June 11, 2004

AUSTIN, Texas - Cal senior Sheni Russell earned All-America honors today, finishing 10th in the country in the women's discus. Russell, the school record-holder in the event, threw the discus 174-11 (53.32m) at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas. Russell's record stands at 181-02, set in April at the Triton Invitational.

The preliminaries of the women's discus were set for Wednesday but were cancelled due to stormy weather. As a result, today's event ran like a normal meet with several flights and then the top nine competitors advancing to a final round. At No. 10, Russell missed the final round by only four inches.

In the triple jump, senior Bruce Giron finished 19th with a jump oof 50-07.50 (15.43m). Fellow senior Vincent Ibia finished 25th with a jump of 48-02.75 (14.70m).

On the track, seniors Ahmad Wright and Deanna Slaton each finished 24th in the men's and women's 400 meter hurdles, respectively. Wright took the course in 52.46 seconds. Slaton, No. 2 all-time at Cal, finished her event in 59.91 seconds.

The NCAA Championships conclude tomorrow when junior Rhuben Williams competes in the finals of the shot put and sophomore Teak Wilburn seeks the national title in the high jump.
