Gunderson Earns Freshman All-America

June 14, 2004

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State freshman lefthander Kevin Gunderson has been named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America baseball team as a relief pitcher. The team was selected by the staff of Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

Gunderson (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic HS) had a 6-2 record and three saves for the Beavers while compiling a 2.90 earned run average. He pitched in 22 games, all in relief; in 49 2/3 innings, he allowed 22 runs (16 earned) on 32 hits and 16 walks while striking out 38.

Opponents batted just .186 against Gunderson, and he earned Pacific-10 Pitcher of the Week honors after saving two OSU victories at Southern California. Earlier this month, Gunderson earned honorable mention when the All-Pacific-10 team was announced.

Gunderson's selection made 2004 the third straight season that the Beavers have had a player earn Freshman All-America honors, following outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury in 2003 and outfielder Aaron Mathews in 2002.
