Former Trojan Justin Lehr Called Up By Oakland

LOS ANGELES -- Former USC pitcher/catcher Justin Lehr (West Covina, Calif/West Covina HS) was called up by the Oakland Athletics today, joining the team during its current road trip in St. Louis. Lehr was 4-1 with a 1.97 ERA with the Sacramento River Cats, the A's triple-A team. As Sacramento's closer, Lehr threw 32 innings in 27 appearances with 10 walks and 38 strikeouts.
Lehr becomes the 90th former Trojan to reach the major leagues and the 22nd player to have played for head coach Mike Gillespie at USC.
In 1999, Lehr transferred from UC Santa Barbara and went 7-3 with a 4.29 ERA in his senior season. As the team's No. 2 starter behind current A's teammate Barry Zito, Lehr threw 113 1/3 innings and allowed 114 hits with 42 walks and 109 strikeouts. He also batted .297 with four home runs and 27 RBI and earned All-Pac-10 honorable mention honors.
