June 25, 2004
LOS ANGELES -- USC freshman right-hander Ian Kennedy threw 2 2/3 no-hit innings Thursday as the USA Baseball National Team defeated Canada, 9-0, in an exhibition in Durham, North Carolina. In fact, Kennedy started the first no-hitter in USA Baseball National Team history as a total of five pitchers combined for the feat.
Kennedy got the no-decision in the start, facing nine batters. He struck out six batters, including four in a row.
USC sophomore catcher Jeff Clement is also participating with Kennedy at the USA Baseball Team Trials as the final roster will be announced later this weekend.
This summer, the United States will compete at the II FISU World University Baseball Championships in Chinese Taipei on July 22-31. Team USA will first travel to Japan for the annual five-game series against the Japanese Collegiate All-Stars -- the 33rd annual meeting of the two countries -- and then return to the United States to play approximately 10 more domestic games before traveling to the FISU World University Championships.
