Jun Advances and Martin Falls in USWAPL Match Play

June 25, 2004

UCLA golfers Hannah Jun and Melissa Martin met with different fates Friday morning at the 28th U.S. Women's Amateur Publinks Championships, hosted by the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, VA.

Jun advanced to the third round of match play with a 2 and 1 victory over Stephanie Kono of Honolulu, HI. Jun never trailed in her match, taking the lead on the first hole with a par while Kono opened with a bogey. That advantage stood until the fifth hole when Kono bogeyed the par-5 and Jun made her fifth straight par. At the sixth, Kono bogeyed again and Jun made another par to take a 3-up lead. Kono never threatened again, although she cut the lead to two twice.

Jun currently is playing her third round match against Ko-Chen Yeh of Chinese Taipei.

Martin held her own against Wie, the defending champion, and, in fact, held a 1-up lead after a birdie at the par-3 seventh. Wie answered immediately with a birdie at the par-5 eighth as Martin carded a par. The match remained all square until the 13th hole when Wie made birdie to go 1-up. Bogeys by Martin at the 15th and 17th gave Wie the victory.
