Men's Basketball's Jim Hanchett To Join Beaver Football Squad This Fall
June 25, 2004
CORVALLIS, Ore. - -
Oregon State senior men's basketball player Jim Hanchett will join the Beaver football squad this fall and return to the basketball team at the conclusion of football season, basketball head coach Jay John announced Friday.
'Jim Hanchett has decided he wants to give football a try, and we support his decision,' John said. 'Jim will return to the basketball team at the completion of football season and be categorized as a walk-on for basketball.
'In the meantime, this makes available an additional scholarship which we can use for the upcoming season or next year's recruiting class,' John explained. 'Jim will miss our first three games as he prepares for the Civil War (Nov. 20), and then he will immediately return to the basketball team. Should the football team go to a bowl game, Mike Riley and I have negotiated a schedule that will accommodate practice times and game participation for both teams as well as Jim.'
The 6-foot-6, 248-pound Hanchett will be listed as a tight end on the football depth chart.
The men's basketball team now has 12 scholarship student-athletes.
Hanchett, one of 11 returning letterwinners as a forward on the basketball squad, will be a scholarship member of the football team and count against its NCAA limit of 85 scholarships.
Hanchett was the team's second-leading rebounder last year at 5.5 per game while playing only 21.6 minutes per contest. His 7.3 points-per-game average was fourth.
Hanchett earned four letters in basketball and one in tennis at McIntosh High School in Peachtree City, Ga.
