USA Women Sweep Puerto Rico, Qualify For 2005 Grand Prix

Mexicali, Mexico - Nancy Metcalf scored a match-high 24 points to lead four players in double-figures as the USA women's national volleyball team defeated Puerto Rico, 3-0, in the quarterfinals of the Pan American Cup Thursday night.
Metcalf (Hull, Iowa) blasted 23 kills with one block in the 30-28, 25-15, 25-17 victory for the United States, which will now play the Dominican Republic in Friday's semifinals.
With the win, the United States also qualified for the 2005 World Grand Prix by guaranteeing itself a top-four finish.
Ogonna Nnamani (Normal, Ill.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) each scored 12 points and Elisha Thomas (Grass Valley, Calif.) added 11 points for Team USA, which improved to 4-1 at the tournament.
Nnamani (Normal, Ill.) had nine kills and three blocks; Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) had eight kills, a match-high three service aces and one block; and Thomas (Grass Valley, Calif.) added eight kills and three blocks.
In Thursday's other championship quarterfinal match, Brazil defeated Canada, 3-1, and will now play Cuba in the semifinals.
