Sola Places 11th in Shot Put at U.S. Junior Track & Field Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- University of Arizona freshman Jarred Sola competed at the 2004 U.S. Junior Track and Field Championships in College Station, Texas on Saturday. Sola was a qualifier in the men's shot put (6 kg). The top two qualifying finishers are eligible to compete for Team USA at the 2004 IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships in Grosseto, Italy in July.
Sola took to the ring Saturday evening for the shot put final. In his first throw, he threw 54 feet, 7 1/2 inches (16.65m). His second and third attempts were fouls, leaving his first throw as his best. Sola did not qualify for the final and another three throws. He finished 11th overall in the individual standings.
Freshman Daniel Marshall is also competing at the 2004 U.S. Junior Championships. He will take to the runway Saturday night for the men's triple jump final. Several other Wildcats are continuing their training as they prepare for the 2004 United States Olympic Trials in Sacramento next month. The trials get underway July 9-18 at CSU-Sacramento.
