June 28, 2004

College Station, TX - UCLA's standout freshman Brandon Johnson dominated in the 400m hurdles at the 2004 USATF Junior Championships, held June 25-27 at Texas A&M's Anderson Track and Field Complex. In preliminary action, Johnson won his heat in 50.11. It was also the fastest time of the prelims and World Junior Championships qualifying time. In the final, Johnson bettered his time, winning in 49.59. Florida's Kerron Clement finished second in 50.86. As a one of the top-two finishers, Johnson has now gained an automatic berth to the World Junior Championships, which will take place July 13-18 in Grosetto, Italy.

Johnson is the third Bruin to win a US junior title this century. Bruin All-American Dan Ames won the discus title in 2000 (189-8) and Jon Rankin won the 1500m title in 2001 (3:51.8).

Also competing last weekend was Greg Garza, who redshirted the 2004 season. Garza finished third in the second heat of the discus with a throw of 177-1 (53.99m). In the finals, his mark of 177-1 was the ninth best throw of the day.
