Arizona State Closes Sun Angel Stadium to Public Use

July 1, 2004

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State will close Sun Angel Stadium to public use today, the ASU Athletic Department announced. The closure will include all aspects of the facility, including the running surface, stadium bleachers and field event areas.

The permanent closure will become effective July 1 and is being done to alleviate the wear and tear on the track's deteriorating and sub-par running surface. In recent years, vandalism of the grounds and destruction of equipment, such as hurdles and jump pits, have increased. The closure also is a way to protect the longevity of the running surface while the needed funds are raised to resurface the lanes, projected for two to three years from now. Safety concerns also were a key component to the closure as several injuries have been reported.

Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium has been home to the ASU track and field programs since 1976.
