July 6, 2004

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - University of Arizona golfer Erica Blasberg will forego her remaining collegiate eligibility to pursue her dream of becoming a professional golfer, she announced Monday.

Statement from Erica Blasberg, July 6, 2004:

'I am excited to announce today my intention to participate in the Futures Tour, beginning next week in Stratton Mountain, Vermont. This will be my last tournament played as an amateur. At this point in my career, I believe the time has come to step up to the next level of competition.'

'I have greatly enjoyed my two years at the University of Arizona and want to thank my coach, the U of Arizona Athletic Department and my teammates for the experience we have shared. I will continue to be a Wildcat in my heart. I plan to continue a complete my education as soon as possible. Thank you.'

Statement from Leigh Steinberg:

' We have an athletic practice that is predicated on role modeling and people who can make a different in this world. She [Erica Blasberg] fits nicely in that model; she's bright, attractive and can make an incredible impact on the links and off. She has an upbeat and pleasing personality but plays with fire and passion. I think she can make a real impact on the tour.'
