Canada Cup Softball Update

Five UCLA softball players, sophomores Caitlin Benyi, Andrea Duran and Emily Zaplatosch along with freshmen Lisa Dodd and Jodie Legaspi, are participating with the USA Schutt Elite Team at the Canada Cup this week. The following is a recap of USA's games played through Tuesday. For more complete recaps of each game, click here

USA 3, Chinese Taipei 0
Caitlin Benyi went 2-for-3 in USA Schutt Elite's debut performances, a 3-0 victory ove rChinese Taipei. Lisa Dodd started at designated player, going 1-for-3 in the game. Jodie Legaspi and Emily Zaplatosch started in right field and behind the plate, respectively, while Andrea Duran started in left field and had her first stolen base of the tournament in the game.

Japan Elite 2, USA 1
Lisa Dodd was the starting pitcher for USA Elite, tossing three shutout innings while striking out three. When Dodd was removed from the circle for the fourth inning, the Americans were leading 1-0. Team USA had just three hits in the loss and had two costly errors in the late innings of the game. Benyi (designated player), Duran (third base) and Emily Zaplatosch (catcher) also started the game.

USA 4, Triple Crown Force 0
The USA Schutt Elite Team bounced back from the loss to Japan Elite with a 4-0 victory over Triple Crown Force. Once again, all five UCLA players started the game, while Benyi paced the USA offense going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a triple, an RBI and a stolen base. Jodie Legaspi, playing right field, went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a sacrifice. Andrea Duran started at first base, going 1-for-1 at the plate with a run scored, and Emily Zaplatosch started behind the plate, catching Lisa Dodd.

Dodd did not hit in the game, but shared a two-hit shutout in the USA Elite victory, striking out one during three innings in the circle. Offensively, Zaplatosch went 1-for-2 with an RBI in the contest.

USA 6, Buffalo Bison 0
Caitlin Benyi had a multi-hit effort for the USA, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a two-run single in the victory. Shortstop Lisa Dodd and first baseman Andrea Duran also contributed as Dodd went 1-for-3 with a run scored, an RBI, a walk, a stolen base, and a defensive play that cut down a Bison runner at the plate. Duran also had a 1-for-3 day at the plate with a run scored, and Legaspi started in right field.

USA 10, Bloomington Hearts 0 (5 innings)
A run-rule victory by USA Schutt Elite saw all five Bruins either score a run or provide an RBI in the contest. Dodd walked twice, scoring both times, Benyi and Legaspi both went 1-for-1 with a run scored and an RBI and Andrea Duran had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Zaplatosch had a 1-for-3 day at the plate with an RBI and a double while catching Monica Abbott, who struck out eight in the five-inning contest.
