Three Swimmers From Stanford Qualify For 100 Fly Finals At Olympic Trials

Stanford, Calif. - Current Stanford swimmer Dana Kirk along with former Stanford swimmers Jenny Thompson and Misty Hyman, qualified for the finals of the 100 fly on Thursday with their performances in the prelims and semifinals of the event Wednesday on the opening day of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials at the Charter All Digital Aquatic Centre in Long Beach.
Kirk was Stanford's top finisher in the semifinals with a fourth-place finish, completing the long-course event in 59.08. Thompson clocked in at fifth with a time of 59.17, while Hyman was sixth with a mark of 59.26. Former Stanford swimmer Shelly Ripple Johnston also competed in the event, placing 13th with a time of 1:00.57 in the semis.
Current Stanford swimmer Kristen Caverly finished third in the finals of the 400 IM on Wednesday, clocking in with a time of 4:42.57 in the finals. Lauren Costella, also a current Stanford swimmer, was 50th with a time of 5:06.0 in the prelims.
Current Stanford swimmers scheduled to participate in the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials include Lacey Boutwell (100 fly, 50 free, 100 free); Caverly (400 IM, 200 IM, 200 breast), Costella (400 IM), Ashley Daly (100 fly, 200 IM); Laura Davis (100 fly, 200 fly, 100 breast, 200 breast, 200 IM); Kirsten Gilbert (100 breast); Morgan Hentzen (400 free, 800 free); Dana Kirk (100 fly, 200 fly); Tami Ransom (200 IM, 400 IM) and Amy Wagner (100 back).
Caverly, Hentzen and Kirk all boast seedings in the Top 10. Kirk has the highest ranking of any current Stanford swimmer, as she is second in the 200 fly and also came into today's 100 fly seeded ninth. Caverly is among the Top 10 seeds in three events, ranking fourth in the 400 IM coming into today's event, as well as sixth in the 200 IM and seventh in the 200 breast. Henzten is ninth in the 800 free and tenth in the 400 free.
Former Stanford swimmers that have qualified for the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials include Jessica Foschi (200 free, 400 free, 200 IM); Hyman (100 fly, 200 fly, 100 back, 200 back); Tara Kirk (100 breast, 200 breast); Ripple Johnston (50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 100 fly, 200 IM); Gabrielle Rose (100 free, 200 free, 200 IM) and Thompson (50 free, 100 free, 100 fly).
Thompson is the only current or former Stanford swimmer with a top seed (50 free) in an event. She was also second in the 100 fly and is third in the 100 free. Kirk is third in both the 100 and 200 breast. Rose has four Top 10 seedings in the 200 IM (fourth), 100 free (fifth), 200 free (seventh) and 100 breast (seventh). Other Top 10 seedings by former Stanford swimmers include Ripple (fourth coming into today's 100 fly) and Hyman (seventh coming into today's 100 fly; eighth in the 200 fly).
The 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials will air live on NBC on Friday, July 9 (6-7 pm, PT) and Sunday, July 11 (6-7 pm, PT). The event will also be shown tape-delayed on Sunday, July 18 (10 am - 1 pm, PT).
The 26-member U.S. Olympic Women's Swimming Team will be chosen on July 15, one day after the conclusion of the event that runs through July 14.
