Jenny Thompson and Tara Kirk Highlight Performances At Olympic Trials Thursday

Long Beach, Calif. - Former Stanford swimmers Jenny Thompson and Tara Kirk posted the top performances by former and current Stanford swimmers participating Thursday during the second day of the long-course 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials at the Charter All Digital Aquatic Center in Long Beach. Thompson finished second in the finals of the 100 fly in a time of 58.98, while Kirk clocked in at 1:07.33 in the 100 breast semifinals to pick up the top seed for the finals of the event on Friday.
Current Stanford swimmers Dana Kirk and Morgan Hentzen also participated in finals action on Thursday. Kirk was fourth in the 100 fly with a time of 59.19, while Hentzen was eighth in the 400 free with a mark of 4:14.58. Former Stanford swimmer Misty Hyman appeared in the finals of the 100 fly, finishing eighth with a time of 59.92.
Other current Stanford swimmers participating in prelim action on Thursday included Kirsten Gilbert (100 breast, 49th, 1:14.19) and Laura Davis (100 breast, 52nd, 1:14.70). Lauren Costella was 60th in the 400 free prelims with a time of 4:27.28.
Former Stanford swimmer Jessica Foschi placed 27th in the 400 free with a prelim time of 4:18.84.
Current Stanford swimmers that have competed or are scheduled to participate in the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials include Lacey Boutwell (100 fly, 50 free, 100 free); Kirsten Caverly (400 IM, 200 IM, 200 breast), Costella (400 free, 400 IM), Ashley Daly (100 fly, 200 IM); Davis (100 fly, 200 fly, 100 breast, 200 breast, 200 IM); Gilbert (100 breast); Hentzen (400 free, 800 free); Dana Kirk (100 fly, 200 fly) and Tami Ransom (200 IM, 400 IM).
Caverly's third-place finish in the 400 IM on the opening day of the event Wednesday was the only finals performance by a current Stanford swimmer prior to Thursday's action.
Former Stanford swimmers that have competed or are scheduled to participate in the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials include Foschi (200 free, 400 free, 200 IM); Hyman (100 fly, 200 fly, 100 back, 200 back); Tara Kirk (100 breast, 200 breast); Shelly Ripple Johnston (50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 100 fly, 200 IM); Gabrielle Rose (100 free, 200 free, 200 IM) and Thompson (50 free, 100 free, 100 fly).
The 26-member U.S. Olympic Women's Swimming Team will be chosen on July 15, one day after the conclusion of the event that runs through July 14.
The 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials will air on a same-day tape-delayed basis on NBC on Friday, July 9 (8-9 pm, PT) and Sunday, July 11 (8-9 pm, PT). A wrap-up of the entire event will also be shown tape-delayed on Sunday, July 18 (10 am - 12 pm, PT).
