NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship Will Return to Spokane

July 9, 2004

PULLMAN, Wash. - March Madness will return to the Inland Northwest in 2007 when Washington State University and the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena host the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship first and second rounds.

The six games are scheduled for March 15 and 17, 2007.

'We're excited to be hosting the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship again,' WSU Assistant Athletics Director for Event and Facilities Operations John David Wicker said. 'We feel like we did a good job in 2003 and we are looking forward to hosting such a prestigious event with the Spokane Arena in 2007.'

This marks the fourth time the NCAA has placed a championship event in Spokane. In 1997, WSU and the Spokane Arena hosted the Division I Women's Volleyball national semifinals and championship match. The event saw a then-record 21,076 patrons attend the two sessions.

The 2001 Division I Women's Basketball West Regional took place at the Spokane Arena and saw Southwest Missouri State's Jackie Stiles, the Associated Press Player of the Year, lead her team to the Women's Final Four.

The Division I Men's Basketball Championship made its debut at the Spokane Arena in 2003 for the first and second rounds. Three sold-out sessions featured five of the top eight selections from the 2004 NBA Draft in Connecticut's Emeka Okafor (No. 2, Charlotte) and Ben Gordon (No. 3, Chicago), Wisconsin's Devin Harris (No. 5, Washington), Josh Childress of Stanford (No. 6, Atlanta) and BYU's Rafael Araujo (No. 8, Toronto).

'We are thrilled to be teaming with Washington State University as hosts for another NCAA marquee event,' said Kevin Twohig, General Manager of the Spokane Arena and Executive Director of the Spokane Public Facilities District. 'The NCAA's decision to return to the Inland Northwest is a testament to the tremendous support we have received from the Spokane community.'

Twohig added tickets will go on sale approximately 11 months prior to the event. Information regarding how to purchase tickets will be released at a later date.
