Varner Qualifies for Discus Final at Olympic Trials

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- University of Arizona sophomore Rachel Varner competed in the qualifying round of the women's discus throw at the 2004 USA Olympic Track & Field Trials on Saturday afternoon. The trials are taking place at Sacramento State University's Alex G. Spanos Stadium from July 9-18.

Varner competed in the first flight of competitors on Saturday. Her first throw of the competition was the best of her three attempts. The throw was measured at 180 feet, 10 inches (55.11m). She finished tied for seventh in her flight and tied for 12th in the overall standings, advancing her to Monday's final.

The women's discus final will take place on Monday, July 12 beginning at 7:30 p.m. PT. Varner will compete against 12 other throwers for a chance to represent the United States at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
