Four Former Bruins Will Participate In MLS All-Star Game

July 12, 2004

Former UCLA soccer stars Frankie Hejduk, Jimmy Conrad and Kevin Hartman have been selected to the 2004 MLS All-Star teams. Columbus Crew defender Hejduk was selected as a starter for the Eastern Conference, while Kansas City Wizards defender Conrad and Los Angeles Galaxy golakeeper Hartman were named as Western Conference reserves. Galaxy coach and former long-time UCLA head coach Sigi Schmid will coach the Western Conference team.

Hejduk is making his third All-Star appearance, having previously been selected to the teams in 1998 and 2003. An NSCAA All-American in 1994 as a Bruin junior, Hejduk was a member of the 2002 and 1998 U.S. World Cup teams and the 1996 and 2000 Olympic teams.

Conrad was selected to the All-Star team for the first time in his career. He was a starter on UCLA's NCAA Championship team in 1997 and a starter on the San Jose Earthquakes' MLS Cup Championship team in 2001.

Hartman earned his second-straight and third overall All-Star nod. He was UCLA's team Co-MVP in 1996 and was named the 1999 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. He was the starting keeper for the Galaxy's 2002 MLS Cup Championship team.

By virtue of his Galaxy team's first place standing in the Western Conference, Schmid earned head coaching duties for the Western Conference team. Schmid, who coached at UCLA from 1980-1998 and led the Bruins to three NCAA titles, will take the helm of an All-Star team for the first time in his MLS career. Schmid has led the Galaxy to every major club championship in the United States and the CONCACAF region since taking over the reins of the squad six games into the 1999 season. Currently in his sixth season with the club, Schmid has guided the Galaxy to MLS Cup 2002, the 2001 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the 2000 CONCACAF Champions Cup.

The All-Star Game, which will take place on July 31 at 2 p.m. ET in Washington, D.C., will pit the best of the Eastern Conference against the best of the Western Conference and will be preceded by a match between a reunion of 1994 World Cup stars against a team of former MLS internationals.
