Cal Alum Makes Olympic Team

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Cal alum Travis Nutter made the U.S. Olympic team last night by finishing third in the finals of the men's hammer throw. Nutter, class of 1998, threw 237-09 (72.46m) to earn his first trip to the Olympics, pending his also earning an Olympic 'A' Standard by Aug. 9. The Olympic 'A' standard for men in the hammer is 78.65 meters.

Fellow alums Grace Upshaw and Bolota Asmerom positioned themselves for the finals in their own events. Upshaw finished second in the preliminaries of the long jump 21-05.50 (6.54m). The women's long jump final takes place at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday. Asmerom placed third in the preliminaries of the 5000 meter run, 13:42.49. The finals of the men's 5000 meter are at 8:55 p.m. on Friday.

USA will air coverage of the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Team Trials Thursday from 10 p.m. to midnight and Friday from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Cal Track and Field will host a reception, sponsored by class of 1964 high jumper Roger Olsen, on Wednesday, July 14 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Sacramento.
