Jensen, Vendt Finish 1-2 In 1500m Free To Qualify In Final Event Of U.S. Swim Trials

July 14, 2004

USC's Larsen Jensen and Erik Vendt wrapped up the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in fitting fashion, finishing first and second, respectively, in the 1500m freestyle in the final race of the meet on Wednesday (July 14) in Long Beach, Calif.

Jensen, a freshan in 2004 who took the spring semester off to train for the Trials, set an American record, swimming to victory in 14:56.71, breaking Chris Thompson's mark by a tenth of a second. Vendt, who was even with Jensen for the first half of the race before Jensen began pulling away, swam to second in 15:11.96.

The event was the second in which both qualified, Jensen previously qualifying in the 400m free, Vendt in the 400m IM.

Including Vendt and Jensen, nine current, former and incoming Trojans will join USC head coach and U.S. women's head Mark Schubert on the U.S. team.

Headlining the mix is senior-to-be Kaitlin Sandeno, who will compete in a U.S. women's team-high four events. A complete list of USC Olympians on this year's U.S. team is below.

From here, the Olympic Team and coaching staff will report to training camp in Palo Alto, Calif., on July 18. They will spend about three weeks together there and at another training camp in Mallorca, Spain before heading off to Athens to compete in the Olympic Games, Aug. 14-21.
