Barrett Scores Again As U.S. U-20s Tie Wales

July 21, 2004

The U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team tied their third-straight match at the 2004 Milk Cup in Northern Ireland, battling Wales to a 1-1 tie Wednesday afternoon. Bruin sophomore forward Chad Barrett scored the team's only goal for his second goal in three tournament games.

Barrett's equalizer goal came just one minute after teammate Patrick Phelan was red-carded. U.S. keeper Quentin Westberg created the goal when he cleared a loose ball in the box. The ball was left untouched by the Welsh defense, bouncing high into the air, and Barrett snuck in to head the ball over goalkeeper Craig Attard, who had left his line.

Barrett also set up a near-goal in the 39th minute when he beat his man in the area and then found Charlie Davies in the middle for an easy tap-in, but the assistant referee said the ball had crossed the endline before Barrett made the pass.

Sophomore defender Kiel McClung made his third start of the tournament for the U.S.

The U.S. tied Denmark 1-1 and Turkey 0-0 in its two earlier Group 2 matches as well and is tied with Denmark for second place. With all tie-breakers even between Denmark and the U.S., the two teams will have a penalty shoot-out on Thursday to determine which team will finish in second place and take on the second-place team in Group 1 in the 3rd/4th Place match on Saturday, July 23.
