Men's Soccer Announces Support Committee Board Members

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Washington men's soccer coach Dean Wurzberger announced Thursday that a 10-member support committee has been formed to work closely with the Husky soccer staff with the collective goal of providing support and assistance in areas of immediate need to the program.The support committee is comprised of Husky soccer supporters and alumni. The group's initial goal will be to raise $50,000 for the program, to cover items not included in the annual budget. The intended funds will go towards solidifying a salary for the second full-time assistant coaching position on Wurzberger's staff, as well as providing a pool of money for a second home tournament.The 10 members of the committee are Russ Amick, Nan Bettinger, Stefan Cobb, Frank Gallo (committee chairperson), Paul Hurme, Brian Klein, Mark Schuur, Banger Smith, Dan Vaughn, and Craig Waibel.Amick received his undergraduate degree from UW in 1963 before going on to Harvard Business School where he graduated in 1965. Amick has been active in the Seattle business community, as well the local soccer community. He was a board member for the Tacoma Stars indoor soccer team and coached kids through the Under-19 premier leagues.Bettinger is the mother of Rees Bettinger who played for the Huskies from 1996-99. Bettinger is herself a UW alum, and is currently a registered dental hygienist. She has been involved with the Lake Washington Youth Soccer Association for 23 years. Cobb is a 1981 UW graduate. Gallo is a former Husky soccer coach from 1980-82, and is also a local youth soccer club director and businessman. Hurme is a former UW player who wore the purple and gold from 1991-94. He currently coaches for Snohomish United and works for Varsity Communications, a Seattle-based marketing and advertising company.Klein is a managing member of Steelhead Partners, a Seattle-based money management company. He is also a board member of the Seattle World Affairs Council, the Lake Washington Soccer Association, the Bush School, Rainier Prep, Vision Youth, Up With People International and a member of the American Council on Germany. He did his undergraduate work at Texas Christian and got this MBA in finance at Southern Methodist.Schuur was a goalkeeper who played with the Huskies from 1979-82 and was drafted by the Seattle Sounders. He is currently the director of Seattle Savings Bank, officer of Omni Properties, Inc., director/officer of Pizza Blends, Inc., and part owner/officer of Caffe D'arte LLC in Seattle.Smith is a UW alum and current men's soccer representative on the Tyee Sports Council. Vaughn, a four-year UW letterman in soccer from 1974-1977, is currently in sales and sales management in the computer network and information technology markets. He coaches the Fircrest Storm U-19 boys soccer team. Waibel, a former Husky who played from 1994-98, currently plays professionally with the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer.
