Volleyball Team Headed To Europe
Aug. 6, 2004
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State volleyball team will take a different approach to its fall camp this month. Instead of practicing in Gill Coliseum, the Beavers will head overseas and play eight matches on a two-week trip to Europe. The Beavers depart for Europe on August 10 and will spend time in the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovenia and Hungary before returning to Oregon on August 24. The hope is that the trip will better prepare the Beavers - who return four starters from last year's 16-16 squad - for their upcoming season.'One of the benefits of this trip is that everyone on the roster is going to get some quality match experience before the season even starts,' said head coach Nancy Somera. 'Otherwise, we'd be looking for our subs to get experience during the non-conference matches, when wins and losses are on the line. In Europe, we'll be able to focus more on getting experience rather than on the outcome of the match.' Seeing a different style of volleyball should help the Beavers identify key areas to work on and hopefully put the team at a slight advantage once the actual season starts September 3.'You can practice all you want, but players in your own gym know what works for them and know what the other players are going to do. Playing matches truly exposes what you need to get better at because you have a team that plays a different defense, uses a different blocking scheme, and has hitters that hit different shots than our hitters do,' Somera said. The Beavers will start the tour in Prague, Czech Republic, where they'll face the Czech National Team in their first match of the tour. While in Prague, they'll also play Slavia Praha, the sixth place team in the Czech first division. A river cruise and a castle tour also are planned during the team's stay in Prague. After leaving Prague, the team will head to Brno, Czech Republic, where it will play two matches against KP Brno, the Czech first division's first-place team. The team will then spend time sightseeing in Vienna, Austria, beforeheading to Maribor, Slovenia. In addition to sightseeing in Maribor, the Beavers will play matches against Mector Ljubljana and KBM Maribor, the top two teams in Slovenia's first division. The Beavers will conclude the tour with two matches in Budapest, Hungary, where they'll also have time for sightseeing along the way.
