Incoming Freshman Brooke Bishop Wins 50 Free At U.S. Nationals

Stanford, Calif. - Incoming Stanford freshman Brooke Bishop (Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics) captured the 50 free on the fifth and final day of the 2004 ConocoPhillips Summer National Swimming Championships being held in long-course meters at the Avery Aquatics Center on the campus of Stanford University. Bishop clocked in at 26.10 to edge Tanica Jamison (Longhorn Aquatics) by one-hundredth of a second.Current Stanford junior Laura Davis (Terrapins Swim Club) and senior Lacey Boutwell (Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics) also participated in championship finals on Saturday. Davis was fifth in the 200 IM in a time of 2:18.00, while Boutwell was seventh in the 50 free with a mark 26.49. Davis also swam the second leg (1:12.97) on the Terrapins Swim Club sixth-place 400 medley relay team (4:17.15).Current Stanford sophomore Lauren Costella (Carson Tigersharks) was 16th in the 1500 free, completing the course in 17:03.88.Bishop (1:05.01), current Stanford senior Kirsten Gilbert (1:13.83) and Boutwell (1:03.24) swam the first three legs on the Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics 400 medley relay team that finished 10th with a mark of 4:21.13.Other individual event winners on Saturday included Danielle Townsend (200 IM, 2:15.75, Aggie Swim Club) and Kate Ziegler (1500 free, 16:22.03, The Fish).A Longhorn Aquatics 400 medley relay team of Hayley McGregory (1:02.17), Alexandra Spann (1:11.29), Andrea Axtell (1:00.85) and Jamison (56.03) was also a winner in a total team time of 4:10.34.Stanford women's swimming associates that competed in the five day event included current Stanford swimmers Boutwell, Costella, Davis, Lisa Falzone, Gilbert and Sarah Jones; former Stanford swimmers Megan Baumgartner, Misty Hyman and Shelly Ripple Johnston; and 2004-05 incoming Stanford swimmers Katherine Bell, Bishop and Elizabeth Durot.Complete coverage of the 2004 ConocoPhillips Summer National Swimming Championships is provided on the USA Swimming website.
