Huskies Name Kate Werner Director of Women's Basketball Operations

SEATTLE, WASH. -- Kate Werner has been named Director of Basketball Operations for the Washington women's basketball team, head coach June Daugherty announced Thursday.'This is an incredible opportunity,' Werner said. 'I'm excited about working with a program with such great tradition. I have the utmost respect for June and her staff, and I'm hoping I can take a load off their shoulders and help in any way I can.'Werner, a native of Pullman, Wash., came to Seattle from Whitworth College in Spokane were she recently served an assistant coach for both the women's basketball and softball programs. Werner assisted the basketball staff from 2000-03, while assisting the softball staff from 2000-04. In addition to her coaching duties, Werner served as the equipment room manager for three years during that time.'We're excited to have Kate as an addition to our women's basketball program,' Daugherty said. 'She is a dynamic young person who is bright and highly motivated. We know that she will provide a great deal of support to our players, as well as to the program as a whole.'Werner earned her master's degree in education, with an emphasis in guidance and counseling, from Whitworth in 2003. Prior to that, she received her bachelor of arts degree in business management from Whitworth in 1999.Werner was a collegiate athlete herself, lettering four years (1995-99) in basketball and two years (1997-99) in softball. She is a former teammate of UW women's basketball athletic trainer Jen Ratcliffe, who also played basketball at Whitworth from 1995-99.Werner's experience not only covers collegiate athletics, as she served as a counseling intern at Mt. Spokane High School. She also participated in the AmeriCorps National Service, and volunteered as a mentor and coach for the Varsity Academy of Northwest Basketball Camps.
