Aug. 14, 2004
Athens, Greece - UCLA junior Iris Mora helped lead Mexico to a 1-1 draw with China in the second match in Group F of the Women's Football Olympic tournament, which effectively eliminates China from the medal hunt.
Both teams came out and had early opportunities to score, Wei Ting for China and Maribel Dominguez for Mexico.
In the 11th minute Dominguez pounced on a Ren Liping (CHN) mistake to hit a close range shot which goalkeeper Xiao Zhen (CHN) saved but was unable to hold and Dominguez pounced on the rebound to put Mexico ahead.
Two minutes later she had the opportunity to add a second, but was unable to find the net.
China came back at the Mexicans, knowing a win was vital and managed to hit an equaliser, when Ji Ting fired in a crashing shot from outside the penalty area in the 34th minute.
In the second half neither team was able to create any attacking opportunities, the best one falling to Ji, whose shot from outside the area was saved by Pamela Tajonar (MEX).
Mora, who started and played all 90 minutes of the match, had one shot in the first half and was issued a yellow card in the second half.
'For us it is a positive result after a very difficult match,' said Mora. 'China has a very good team.'
