Soccer Picked Third in the Pac-10 Race

TEMPE, Ariz. -- For the second straight year, the Arizona State women's soccer team has been tabbed to finish third in the 2004 Pacific-10 Conference race in a preseason vote of the head coaches. The Sun Devils also received one first-place vote for the first time in school history and was only two points shy of second place. This year's third place selection along with last year's selection is the highest predicted finish in the nine-year history of the program.The Sun Devils, under fourth year head coach Ray Leone, return nine starters from last year's team that finished a school-record second in the Pac-10 race and advanced to the NCAA second round. Under-21 U.S. National Team member Manya Makoski, along with arguably the two top junior college players (Katie Leahy and Juanita Lawson) will join another strong freshman class that includes 2004 McDonald's All-Americans Alissa Oldenkamp and Kira Sarkisian.Arizona State begins the 2004 season on Friday, August 27 in Tallahassee, Florida against Florida State at 7:00 p.m. (eastern time).
