Reserve Quarterbacks Shine in the Second Scrimmage

Aug. 21, 2004

Corvallis, Ore. - With starting quarterback Derek Anderson standing on the sidelines, given the day off by head coach Mike Riley, attention turned toward the battle for the top reserve behind Anderson. Four quarterbacks led the Beaver offense to 487 yards and four offensive touchdowns.Fifth-year senior Adam Rothenfluh connected on 7 of 8 pass attempts for 101 yards and a 45-yard touchdown strike to receiver Mike Hass. Hass made a juggling catch after being interfered with near the end zone.'Derek has thrown a lot of balls, and I really felt that after that one long week of camp, why does he need to do this today,' head coach Mike Riley explained about his decision to sit Anderson. 'Ryan and Adam never get to do that (play with the first unit). It was just a little bit of preparation that way.'Walk-on sophomore signal caller Colt Charles connected on 4 of 7 attempts for 106 yards, true freshman Brian Hildebrand was 6 of 12 for 103 yards and two touchdowns, and redshirt freshman Ryan Gunderson was 7 of 21 for 61 yards. Hildebrand's two scores were a two-yard pass to tight end Gabe Button and a scrimmage-ending 41-yard pass to true-freshman Zach Tarver.'I thought they made some plays - absolutely,' Riley said of the quarterbacks. 'I don't know if we separated anything today, but they're still competing and it was good for them to get to do that. They made some plays and missed some great opportunities.'Hass led the receiving corps with four catches for 67 yards and the one score, with true freshman Sammie Stroughter accounting for 103 yards on three grabs. The Beaver ground attack netted 116 yards, which included six quarterback sacks. True freshman Yvenson Bernard led the way with 54 yards on eight carrries. Ryan Cole had 33 yards on nine carries and projected starter Dwight Wright had 15 yards on 11 carries against the first team defense. The highlight for the Beaver defense was redshirt-freshman cornerback Gerard Lawson racing 39-yards for a touchdown on a fumble recovery. The Beavers have one more scheduled scrimmage, Thurs., Aug. 26 at the Prothro Football Complex. Oregon State opens the season Sat., Sept. 4 at No. 3 LSU in a game televised live by ESPN.'Two weeks. I'm really looking forward to it, and have been for a while,' Riley said 'I love fall camp. I know how important fall camp is; I think it sets the tone for the entire year.'
