USC Announces Enrollees For 2005 Season

LOS ANGELES -- The Trojan baseball recruiting class for the 2005 season has enrolled at USC, head coach Mike Gillespie announced today.Incoming freshmen include shortstop Matt Cusick (Mission Viejo/Santa Margarita HS), left-handed pitcher/first base Lucas Duda (Riverside/Arlington HS), right-handed pitcher John Dunn (Torrance/West Torrance HS), right-handed pitcher Anthony Encinas (Norwalk/Santa Fe HS), third baseman Roberto Lopez (La Mesa/Rancho Bernardo HS), right-handed pitcher Todd Macklin (Newport Beach/Corona del Mar HS), right-handed pitcher/infielder Steve Martlaro (Diamond Bar/Bishop Amat HS), outfielder Spencer Pabst (Long Beach/Wilson HS), right-handed pitcher Ryan Schlack (Long Beach/Wilson HS), third baseman/right-handed pitcher Nate Smith (Clovis/Clovis HS) and first baseman Barrett Sprowl (Newport Beach/Corona del Mar HS).Two players have transferred from the junior college ranks. Left-handed pitcher Jack Spradlin (Chula Vista/Southwestern College) earned All-America and Pacific Coast Conference Player of the Year honors last year while right-handed pitcher Zack Kalter (Pomona/Pasadena City College) went 7-5 as a pitcher with a .400 batting average and was rated as the No. 2 prospect from the New England Collegiate League this summer.'It's an exciting group of players who we hope will contribute immediately,' said Gillespie.Here are brief biographies on some key players:Matt Cusick, SS, Mission Viejo (Santa Margarita HS) -- Cusick earned 2004 Orange County Register All-Orange County first team honors after batting .389 with three home runs and 21 RBI. He struck out only five times in 95 at-bats for the CIF-SS Division IV champions.Lucas Duda, LHP/1B, Riverside (Arlington HS) -- Duda earned 2004 All-CIF Southern Section Division I Player of the Year and all-state first team honors. As a junior, he batted .493 with nine home runs and 33 RBI, earning All-CIF Division I second team honors.John Dunn, RHP, Torrance (West Torrance HS) -- Dunn went 12-2 with a 1.37 ERA as a senior, earning league most valuable player honors. He also earned All-CIF first team honors as West Torrance won the Bay League regular season championship.Anthony Encinas, RHP/DH, Norwalk (Santa Fe HS) -- Encinas batted .468 in his senior season as a designated hitter for Santa Fe High, earning all-league first team honors.Zack Kalter, RHP, Pomona (Western Christian HS/Pasadena City College) -- Kalter went 7-5 in 14 starts last year at Pasadena with a 4.15 ERA. In 95 1/3 innings, he struck out 78 batters and walked 22 while batting .400 (56-for-140) with six home runs, 17 doubles, three triples, 18 stolen bases and 39 RBI. Kalter was listed as the No. 2 prospect in the New England Collegiate League by Baseball America this summer after batting .353 with 5 home runs, 21 RBI and 15 stolen bases. He allowed 35 hits in 43 innings of work on the mound with 12 walks and 34 strikeouts.Roberto Lopez, 3B, La Mesa (Rancho Bernardo HS) -- Lopez batted .384 with 10 home runs in his senior season at Rancho Bernardo High.Todd Macklin, RHP, Newport Beach (Corona del Mar HS) -- Macklin earned All-CIF first team honors as a senior at Corona Del Mar High, going 9-1 with a 3.02 ERA. In 53 1/3 innings, he walked 19 and struck out 65.Steve Martlaro, RHP/IF, Diamond Bar (Bishop Amat HS) -- Martlaro earned Serra League Pitcher of the Year honors as a senior with a 2.16 ERA. He also batted .347 with six home runs for Bishop Amat High.Spencer Pabst, OF, Long Beach (Wilson HS) -- Pabst batted .427 with 25 stolen bases as a senior for Wilson High, which reached the CIF-SS Division I championship game. He earned All-CIF second team and all-league first team honors.Ryan Schlack, RHP, Long Beach (Wilson HS) -- Schlack earned All-CIF first team honors as a senior for Wilson High, which reached the CIF-SS Division I championship game. He went 11-4 with a 2.22 ERA, earning All-Long Beach Press Telegram first team honors.Nate Smith, 3B/RHP, Clovis (Clovis HS) -- Smith earned 2004 Fresno Bee HS Baseball Team honors after batting .397 with six home runs and 20 RBI while going 7-0 on the mound with a 2.70 ERA. In 62 1/3 innings, Smith registered 84 strikeouts.Jack Spradlin, RHP, Chula Vista (Eastlake HS/Southwestern College) -- Spradlin earned All-America honors last year, as well as being named Pacific Coast Conference Player of the Year. He went 7-1 with a state-best 0.58 ERA, allowing only six earned runs in 93 innings. Spradlin allowed 65 hits, walked 24 and struck out 92 batters.Barrett Sprowl, 1B, Newport Beach (Corona del Mar HS) -- Sprowl earned 2004 CIF-SS Division IV Co-Player of the Year and Orange County Register All-Orange County first team honors after batting .500 with four home runs and 25 RBI. He had 53 hits on the season in 30 games, including two in the Sea Kings' victory in the CIF-SS Division IV championship game.USC will begin the 2005 season at Dedeaux Field on Tuesday (Feb. 8) against San Diego State at 6 p.m. This year's schedule features 35 of 56 games against teams that played in last year's NCAA Tournament.###
