Ninth-Ranked Bruins Down San Diego, 4-0 in Season Opener

Aug. 27, 2004

LOS ANGELES - The ninth-ranked UCLA women's soccer team looked impressive in its 2004 season opener Friday, registering a pair of goals in each half to down San Diego, 4-0 in the season opener for both teams at UCLA's Drake Stadium.

Freshman forward Danesha Adams looked solid in her collegiate debut, scoring two of the Bruins' goals, including the first of the match in the 29th minute. After gathering a loose ball deep in USD territory, Adams cut across to the middle of the filed and unleashed a powerful right-footed shot past the outstretched hands of USD goalkeeper Karen Cook.

UCLA held on to a 1-0 lead until less than five minutes remaining in the first half, when sophomore forward Bristyn Davis punched in a shot from about six yards out. Amy Fazio and Crystal James were credited with assists on that goal.

The second half was a carbon copy of the first, with Adams and then Davis each scoring again. Adams registered her second goal of the match at the 62:13 mark on a driving header following a corner kick. Senior forward Kim Devine tapped a short ball to Lindsay Greco, who then crossed in a perfect ball to Adams for the goal.

Davis capped the scoring for UCLA in the 86th minute of play on an unassisted goal. After dribbling down the left side of the field through the USD defense, Davis was able to draw out Cook and slip past a close-range shot from about nine yards out, giving the Bruins an insurmountable 4-0 lead.

In addition to Adams, freshman goalkeeper Valerie Henderson turned in a solid showing, turning in 90 minutes of scoreless soccer. She also made three saves. Other freshman starters Friday included defender Brynn McGrath and midfielder Alma Playle.

UCLA, which outshot San Diego 14-4 on the night, improves its all-time record against the Toreros to 10-1-2. Since the program's inception in 1993, the Bruins are 9-2-1 in season openers.

Another West Coast Conference team awaits the Bruins on Sunday, as UCLA travels across town to face Loyola Marymount at 1:00 p.m. That match will take place at LMU's Sullivan Field on the campus of LMU.
