Kristen Rivera Named NFCA Diamond Sports Catcher Of The Year

SEATTLE-- Washington's Kristen Rivera has been named the Division I NFCA Diamond Sports Catcher of the Year. The award marks the second-straight season Rivera has nabbed the award for being the top catcher in all of Division I softball.Rivera led Washington to a 40-19 record and an appearance in the Women's College World Series last season. Rivera hit a team-leading .385 with 17 home runs and 47 RBIs. She also was among the nation's leaders with a .825 slugging percentage. Behind the plate, Rivera committed just three errors in 396 chances for a .992 clip.Ten catchers were honored in all by Diamond Sports, the NFCA's Official Protective Equipment. The awards were presented to the top catchers in each of the following 10 divisions: NCAA (Divisions I, II, III), NAIA, NJCAA (Divisions I, II, III), Cal JC, NWAACC (Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges) and high school.The Washington softball team reports for fall practice on Sept. 19 and will host a four-team tournament Oct. 1-2. The Huskies are slated to face Seattle University in a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Oct. 1 and will play Central Washington and Western Washington at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, on Oct. 2.
