No. 10 Cal Volleyball Defeats UC Davis, 3-0, to Start 2004 Campaign

BERKELEY, CA - Behind the strong play of freshman Angie Pressey, the No. 10 ranked Cal women's volleyball team (1-0) started off the 2004 season on a high note with a 3-0 (30-28, 30-22, 30-18) victory over UC Davis (0-1) in the season-opener Wednesday night at Haas Pavilion.Pressey, in her college debut, paced the Bears with 13 kills and added nine digs. Senior Gabrielle Abernathy and junior Alicia Powers chipped in nine kills apiece, with Powers hitting .333 (nine kills, three errors, 18 attempts). Sophomore setter Samantha Carter and sophomore libero Jillian Davis also played well. Carter had 38 assists with five kills with no errors in six attempts for a .833 hitting percentage, while Davis topped the Bears with 18 digs.UC Davis was led by sophomore Rachel Keener's eight kills.The Aggies gave the Bears a battle in game one before losing 30-28. Cal and UC Davis were tied 12 different times during the first game with the Bears finally taking the lead, 25-24, on a Pressey kill. The contest continued to go back and forth until a couple of Aggies ball handling errors broke a 28-28 tie and gave Cal the win.From there the Bears controlled the match, jumping out to 5-0 leads in both the second and third games to win 30-22 and 30-18 before a crowd of 415.'Angie Pressey showed she is special,' said Cal coach Rich Feller. 'We started slow because I think we had a little case of the nerves and we have some high expectations. UC Davis is a scrappy team and kept the ball in play. We just have to keep on getting better.'The Bears will next travel to the Houston (Texas) Tournament, Sept. 3-5. Cal will begin the tournament against No. 14 ranked Kansas State, Friday, Sept. 3, at 5 p.m. The Bears then face Maryland Saturday, Sept. 4 at 1 p.m. and host Houston on Sunday, Sept 5 at 2 p.m. Cal has five tournaments
