USC Women's Volleyball Team Beats Alumni Squad, 3-1

Bibiana Candelas, Keao Burdine and Sarah Florian each had 13 kills to lead the 2004 USC women's volleyball team to a 25-30, 30-24, 30-20, 30-14 victory over a Trojan alumni team in an exhibition match on Wednesday (Sept. 1) in the Lyon Center.Candelas hit .476, Burdine added 14 digs and the freshman Florian hit .417 with 11 digs and 4 aces. Emily Adams had 8 kills and 4 blocks.The alumni squad surprised the two-time defending NCAA champion Women of Troy in the first game, breaking a 24-24 tie by scoring 4 consecutive points. But the 2004 Trojans dominated the next 3 games by hitting .273, .357 and .419, respectively, in those games (conversely, the alumni's hitting percentage dropped each game, from .295 to .154 to .059).The alumni were led by April Ross (11 kills, 12 digs), Kelli Lantz (11 kills, 6 blocks), Jeanne Vetter (10 kills, .364 hitting percentage, 14 digs) and Lauren Killian (8 kills, 15 digs). Also playing for the alumni were Toni Anderson, Stefanie Bodison, Kelly Kuebler, Julie Mariani and Nicole Allen.Before the match, a banner commemorating USC's 2003 NCAA championship was unveiled on the east wall of the Lyon Center, next to the Trojans' five other national title banners.Top-ranked USC, 2-0 this season after winning last weekend's NACWAA Championship, next hosts an exhibition against British Columbia on Friday (Sept. 3) at 7 p.m. and then hosts Georgia (1-0) on Saturday (Sept. 4) at 3 p.m., with both matches in the Lyon Center. On Sunday (Sept. 5), the Women of Troy travel to No. 5 Pepperdine for a 3 p.m. match that will be shown live on CSTV.
