Cabello Goal Lifts Cal to 1-0 Win Over Saint Mary's
Sept. 3, 2004
BERKELEY, Calif. - Junior forward Dania Cabello scored a goal in the 21st minute to lift California to a 1-0 victory over Saint Mary's Friday at Edwards Stadium on the opening day of the Cal Invitational.'I was real happy with our backline today,' said Cal head coach Kevin Boyd, whose team posted its second shutout of the season. 'I felt like they played much more organized and quite a bit smarter, which was one of our concerns coming out of last weekend. I thought our midfield did a good job of connecting and moving the ball around. A win over Saint Mary's is a solid win.'The Golden Bears (2-1) didn't have a shot until Cabello's goal, but they ended up outshooting the Gaels (2-1), 13-10. The goal developed with sophomore midfielder Nadia Al-Lami corralling a ball from the wing and slotting the ball to Cabello on the right side. Cabello took a first touch towards the near post and drove a low ball to the back post past Saint Mary's goalkeeper Andrea Lee.'Dania has been terrific since preseason,' said Boyd. 'She has more experience under her. She's much more mature. She's not focused on her playing time. She's more concerned with the team and her contributions to the team. That's allowing her to take pressure off of herself.'Cabello has tallied two assists and a goal through three games in 2004.Cal had several opportunities to go ahead 2-0 in the second half, including on a hard 12-yard shot by freshman forward Stephanie Wieger, which Lee came up with the save on. Cal defender Courtney Hooker cleared a second-half shot from Saint Mary's Angelina Elliott as it rolled towards the Bears' goal line. Cal goalkeeper Ashley Sulprizio recorded three other saves to preserve the shutout. The Bears face No. 19 Pepperdine on day two of the tournament on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at Edwards Stadium. The Waves' Megan Woods netted a goal in the 86th minute to give her team a 1-0 victory over Columbia in today's first game. Pepperdine held a 17-4 shot advantage. Saint Mary's battles Columbia at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
