McLachlin Surges to Second Place at Cal State Open

UCLA alumnus Parker McLachlin climbed into second place after two rounds of the 84th California State Open being hosted at the Murietta Country Club in Murietta.McLachlin leads a contingent of five players with UCLA ties who made the 36-hole cut.McLachlin, who recently won on the Tight Lies Tour at Rose Creek GC in Edmond, OK, fired a second round score of 66 (-6) and trails the leader by one stroke. He was four under on the back nine Thursday in a round that included seven birdies.UCLA Head Coach O.D. Vincent remained within sight of the leaders, posting a 71 in the second round for a two-round total of 140 (-4). Vincent was five-under par through seven holes before bogeying the eighth, a 431-yard par 4 and the course's No.1 handicap hole. He was still four under through 14 holes before playing the final four holes in three-over par.Recent UCLA graduate and two-time All-American John Merrick, who entered the day tied for the lead, lost three strokes to par and carded a second round 75. He was tied for 21st at three-under 141.Former All-American Travis Johnson rebounded from Wednesday's round of 77 with a four-under par 68 Thursday and made the cut at one-over par 145. Johnson played the inward nine in three-under par in a round that included six birdies. He was tied for 46th place.Also making the cut was former Bruin Eddy Lee, who was tied for 46th at 145.UCLA senior and two-time All-American Charlotte Mayorkas missed the cut, posting a 77 on Thursday for a 36-hole total of 155 (+11).Third round competition continues Friday.To view complete results, click here.
