Volleyball Drops Season Opener To Saint Louis In Five Games
Sept. 3, 2004
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Abby Windell set an Oregon State record, but the Beaver volleyball team lost its season opener 3-2 to Saint Louis at the IU Credit Union Invitational on Friday. The Billikens came from behind to win, 26-30, 30-28, 17-30, 30-28 and 20-18.'We had numerous match points, but we just couldn't put it away,' said coach Nancy Somera. Windell had a career-high 20 kills on .704 hitting, an OSU record for a five-game match. She shattered Angie Shirley's mark of .656 in a 1998 match against Portland. Overall, Windell's mark is the fourth best in school history. Allison Lawrence also made her way into the record books, finishing with a career-high 28 kills to tie for 10th on the OSU single-match charts. Karah Rhoades chipped in 14 kills on .360 hitting, and Brittany Cahoon hit .370 with 13 kills. Desma Stovall took over the starting setter duties and dished out a career-high 66 assists. 'We had great distribution, and some nice hitting percentages by just about everybody,' Somera said. 'But, I'm disappointed in our defense. We didn't move aggressively at all.' OSU outdug the Billikens 62-57, but the 12.5 digs per game average is well below what Somera had expected from her team. 'That was not OSU defense out there. Our goal is to dig 16-17 balls per game, not 12.5. That's the bottom line. We could have won this match with better defense,' Somera said. 'Hopefully we can bring it Saturday.' Freshman libero Nina Baltimore had a solid debut with 15 digs, and Lawrence and Katelyn Healy added 11. Stovall had a career-high 10. In addition to Baltimore's strong start, another Beaver rookie made an impact in her debut. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Kristin Murray hit .667 with five kills. SLU's Aida Antanaviciute, who had 39 kills against Indiana State on Wednesday, had a match-high 32 kills against the Beavers. Teammate Lauren Boissevain added 23 kills on .333 hitting. The IU Credit Union Invitational continues Saturday, when the Beavers face Murray State at 8 a.m. PDT and Indiana at 5:30 p.m. PDT.
